The hero’s journey is one of the most prominent archetypes in literature. Whether we look at that 500 years ago or 500 hours ago, there is always some rendition of it available to the p[resent society.
What is it about this outline that makes it so appealing to an audience.
Comparing ‘Siddhartha’ by Herman Hesse and ‘Into the Spiderverse’ we start to see the overall purpose and therefore, benefit of using this plotline. Both of these stories try to promote a moral or stance. ‘Siddhartha’ tries to show the importance of individuality and how many times the tried and tested method is wrong because everyone is faking it till they make something they can’t make. Spirituality and enlightenment is a self-discovery journey and there is no one answer or procedure. Everyone is different and it takes a leap of faith to get to a point where you can say you know yourself and you can function at your highest potential.
Wow how totally random that the last sentence fit perfectly with the movie I watched. Totally wasn’t planned. Anyway I digress. The situation before is paralleled in ‘Into the Spiderverse’. Miles has to let go of this tried and tested method, which he got from the comic books, and do something that works for him. He took a leap of faith and by his own individual effort he was able to become the best possible Spider Man. One of the most important points that are pointed out throughout the movie is the importance of individuality. Miles was asked by all the other Spider People if he could do the things that were their specialties. They all had to create a path that worked for them, and instead of letting Miles follow his own path, they tried to get him to follow their method and that didn’t work. Miles had to get to a point of self reflection and take a route that worked for him.
Personally I feel like that is the main point of the hero’s journey. They are always individuals who have the power within themselves and they have to find it. The hero’s journey is important because it tells people that “you are important and cool as an individual you just have to find that”.
