Wouldn't it be funny if I did this thing I am totally joking about... unless. This meme has been going around the internet for quite some time, and I couldn't help but notice the similarity between the purpose of this format and the reason most of us use humor. Both of these situations are using humor to talk about something the creator doesn't want to talk about outright. I did a lit digging (sat for a second and then got caught up in my unrelated thoughts) and came to the startling (everyone probably already knew this) discovery. People use humor so that they can talk about anything they want and have the opportunity to claim that it was a joke. Look at this way, how many times has someone made an offensive joke, and when you give them a weird look they claim "It was a joke lighten up".
