I love Harry Potter. I can easily say that it was my childhood, because it was read to me when I was 5 years old, and then I read the whole thing on my own when I was 7 years old (it was in fact my birthday present). Now while she is not my favourite character, there is something very intriguing about Luna Lovegood. For those of you who haven’t read Harry Potter (how dare you?) Luna Lovegood, is one of the main side characters, and her entire thing is that she is different. She believes in things that others don’t believe in, she Accessorize differently, and she behaves differently. All in all she is different.
Now what trips me up is that everyone (who’s read the books) loves Luna. They love her quirky nature and they love how she isn’t afraid from being who she truly is. Embracing their inner nature and not seeing anything wrong with it? Which other character do we know who does the same? Meursault. Meursault is also a character who does not fit in the typical mold of society, but the difference is that people are not fawning over him. The main difference between the frankness of the two characters is the, sort of, harshness to it. What I mean is we do not read Luna’s inner thoughts, because for all we know she could be thinks ‘damn such a drama queen’ every time Harry complained to her, or she thought ‘what I wouldn’t give to smack her shut’ every time Hermione said anything against her beliefs (although to be fair to Hermione, some of the theories were plain weird).
We read every single thought that passes through Meursault’s head, and therefore we have a clearer perception of his character. We see how he just doesn’t give a shit about others, and how he is painfully honest at times, to the point where people start hating him. That is the part of him that causes people to not like him. Luna, in all her weirdness, doesn’t not bring people down, she lightens the environment and she is a joy. Meursault does not care if he is uplifting people, if he is hurting them, if he is being mean. All that matters to him is being plain and honest.
