What is something everyone has heard through some media. The same rhetoric of racism no longer existing, while using underlying concerning phrases. I mean there is the famous 'I have a black friend' or the 'I don't see color'. This fits the 'color blindness' theme. The thing - and I've spoken about this before- is that racism still exists. Raisin in the Sun is very clear in the implicit way racial minority groups are discriminated against. The main defense people have is historical context, and that isn't exactly a good scale because if you want to live in a world where racism isn't a concern because you aren't enslaving people, that world can't have technology: you can't have both, you must have one or the other. If you want the facilities of today you need to base your index on today. Racism today is institutional - housing, wealth- naturalized - it is the way it is naturally- and those are some things we have to combat. The Younger family show how every where there people trying to stop you from moving forward. Racism, as shown in the Raisin in the Sun is like a maze, you try and try to get out of it's affects- poverty, lack of education and shorter life expectancy- but it's made close to impossible. We as a nation make a giant leap forward with Civil Rights Act (which shouldn't have to have happened, because everyone has the right to be treated as a human). Like Jesus Christ we are trying to find aliens, how would we cope if the had like antennas or something. Let's be able to cope with someone being a bit darker, but still the same species as us before we have intergalactical discrimination. I wouldn't be able to keep track if we stockpile them all at once, y'know. Dealing with multiple issues has never been easier than dealing with one issue at a time, I would say it is as rare as a naturally occurring pink elephant (AKA never).
I got a bit depressing in there so let's look at the positives, they may not be very visible, but they are there. Hopefully sooner or later, sooner rather than later, we can look back and say "Once upon a time we were idiots who couldn't live peacefully with diversity. Gosh we were stupid", but until then stay tuned for more comments like "Africans didn't make art until Europeans said it was art".
Should African art be returned to Africa (23 November, 2018).
