Guitar is a very dramatic character, I mean just look at any of his quotes. He always take his own feeling and translates them as though everyone feels the same, and if they don't they are against him, and transitively everyone of his community. From the moment Milkman disagreed with his choice of joining the Seven Days it was as though he had started doubting Milkman, doubting the loyalty Milkman had towards him. He leaves cryptic messages in their conversations, which made it rather clear that he was going to try and kill his own friend. Guitar views being wealthy as having power, but not the general view of power, but the power to ignore the discrimination. He indirectly says this with him constantly pointing out Milkman's wealth. Now the thing is why? Why does he view wealth as something so important, that he is willing to kill someone for having it? His father. His fathers death was tried to be equivivated to a piece of candy- something materialistic. He feels as though people can get away with anything- oppression- through money. Guitar is always associated with materialistic things. His entire thing of his love for the black community, is debunked by his jealousy if Milkman's wealth as well as his description of Hagar shows that he truly wants to own things.Guitar has gotten the shorter side of the stick in almost half of the things people discriminate by- wealth, race, gender and sexuality. He is a poor black man and is friends with someone who's wealth is compared to the wealth of someone white. So maybe he considers Milkman white in all but skin, which prompts his anger against him. In short words, Guitar sees someone who has life easier than him, is low-key white and hates him. He hates people to compensate for his own ( what he thinks) shortcomings.
Everyone I have spoken to (the five other people I talk to on a regular basis) about poetry and their thoughts about it, have in so many words expressed the same idea, poetry is overrated. This made me wonder how poetry is still relevant. From my (very biased, and skewed) sample it is obvious that people don’t really like poetry. Now from personal experience I can say that I thought of poetry as an unnecessary middle ground between stories and songs ( alliterations, they’re perfect). Cause like you get the whole narrative that you get in stories, but you have to add a rhyme scheme and rhythm to it, and then add hidden meanings. AND ALL THIS IS IN 5 STANZAS. Now I have changed a lot of my opinions this year, and poetry has been one of those. Poetry because of its position as a middle ground has the capability to express deep and complex meanings in a few words. It expresses emotions that a story might express in 1000 words, and with a smaller word range each word emphasizes the overall...
I liked your character breakdown of Guitar and how you explained his actions based on his thoughts. This makes more sense on why and how he acts and reveals how he lives up to how Toni Morrison intended for him to act. This makes him feel natural considering his past and thus making his actions not seem too far fetched. Your analysis is also on par with what I think of him already and this is good because many people see him in the same light which is helpful for people to see the character dynamic between Milkman and Guitar change.
