The word 'mature' unknowingly dictates huge portions of our lives, so what exactly qualifies as mature? One of the decade long arguments of mature or not, is related to picture books. Can picture books truly be mature? Can something we enjoyed as children be considered mature, or if we twist it a bit, can something we learned the most basic things from be considered mature? Yeah well we talked about that in class and after soe nt really conflicting ideas we came to consensus that yes, if adults read picture book they wouldn't all of a sudden be considered less mature.
So why and how did this divide originate? Well what happened was that children enjoyed picture books more than Shakespeare, and we all know Shakespeare is very mature, only adults can understand the importance of it, understand the hidden truths of 'Much Ado About Nothing', so anything children find boring is mature, and anything they enjoy is immature. Well the thing is, that little statement is not true, because pictures can actually be much more efficient in illustrating a point. When you look at a picture it is not much different from analyzing a paragraph, because in both scenarios you are taking the base idea- the visible idea- and then breaking it down into components to get the deeper meaning that the creator wanted to show.
The saying 'don't judge a book by its cover' is not just for people, but it can also be used to stop people from judging communication based on the medium through which it is conveyed. If we english students can spend an hour talking about a vignette, and still feel as though time ran out, in a class thought to be centered around words, others can get off their high horses and acknowledge the importance of pictures.
Great Post! I love the point you made about Much Ado About Nothing, because let's all be honest, even some not very "mature" high schoolers will understand the "hidden truths" in Shakespeare. So why should Shakespeare be considered something for a mature adult to read but not comics. Well some of it might just come down to things like vocabulary, but the rest is just arbitrary. Like you said, even in a simple vignette there is just as much meaning and information to unpack and interpret as there is in Shakespeare. So really, we as 11 ap students also show that, yeah comics really are something for intellectuals too.
